SANTA CLAUS VISITS THOMASVILLE!

2 December, 2008 (16:48) | Thomasville Georgia 31792 | By: admin

The weather was perfect for the Thomasville Christmas parade last night…clear and chilly!  The City utility crews did a magnificent job decorating the downtown trees…Broad Street at dark looks like a picture out of a fairy tale. The merchants have their stores decorated for the holiday in hopes that shoppers will “shop till they drop!”

The parade and the crowd were huge this year. Bands, floats, cars with queens, boyscouts, motorcycles, and of course the Re/Max bug, moving van and agents…but the big hit of the night was…

As he made his way down Broad Street, the crowd was so excited. Parents were smiling and the children were giggling, waving and calling his name. Everyone enjoyed the parade, young and old alike.

Tis the Season

Tis the Season….to eat Turkey and Dressing and, Count your Blessings!

crop-group.JPGEveryday at the RE/MAX office here in Thomasville, GA is a great day but last Thursday was a fabulous day!  When the holidays approach, it seems like your mind goes to thinking about wonderful meals…turkey, ham, dressing, desserts and all the trimmings.  And, we started off the season for agents, staff and a few special guests with a covered dish luncheon.  The food was delicious and I will add…plentiful.  In fact, we gathered again on Friday for leftovers (just like we do at home).  The kitchen was jam-packed with food….there was no way to sample it all.  RE/MAX of Thomasville is the “Home of the Best Agents” and now I really think they are the best cooks in town too!

After the meal, with the dessert table set up in the dining hall/training room, a training seminar was available for the ones of us that could stay awake after such a big meal.  We had such a great day….lots of fun!

All of the agents and staff of RE/MAX of Thomasville wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

The Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival

pwaf-sign.jpg

You can’t complain about the lack of something to do this weekend. Fifty nine wildlife artists and wild life demonstrators will participate in this year’s Wild Life Arts Festival, Saturday & Sunday ( the 22nd & 23rd of November ), at the Thomasville Cultural Center. According to Aileen Griffin, the festival director ( what a job! ) “this year’s visitor can expect more activity than at previous festivals”.  Jim Fowler of Wild Kingdom will be here this year with his unusual assortment of animals. There will be a birds of prey demonstration, a butterfly exhibit and a naturehood and Wild Discovery Center, which will provide fun-filled educational opportunities. You’ll see fly fishing demonstrations, field dog trials and canine demonstrations, among others. For ticket information, you can phone 229-226-0588 or visit The Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival website.

I wish all of you a great weekend … make it a special one. See you at the Festival!

What to Wear … Victorian Christmas is Almost Here!

18 November, 2008 (14:15) | Thomasville Georgia 31792 | By: admin

It’s time again to get ready for this annual event, which was voted a 2007 Top 20 Event in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. Downtown on the Bricks will allow you to journey back to the 1890’s in celebration of the true Christmas Spirit. Victorian Christmas is held on the 2nd Thursday viccmas104.jpgand Friday evening in December. In order to journey back to the 1890’s, we need to “dress up” in the traditional period clothing. In other words … find you a costume to stroll the town. Lets transform the streets from jeans to period clothing… allowing our visitors to truly enjoy the experience of a Victorian Christmas.

Tourism coordinators of our Downtown Thomasville will make it easy to participate in the period dress of the past, by renting out costumes for adults and children. Beginning now, you can go to the office of Downtown Thomasville, inside the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium building and talk to the ladies about “what to wear”. The cost is $10.00 with a $20.00 deposit. If you need more information, call 227-7020.

Voice of the People …

14 November, 2008 (14:18) | Thomasville Georgia 31792 | By: admin

Forget “Whatever is OK”

j0284035.gifVoice of the People Meeting….Wow!

Last night, I attended a meeting at the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium.  I knew with the meeting being held at the auditorium, a large crowd was expected.  When I walked in the meeting (late, of course) I was shocked at the number in attendance.  I wandered down to the front, took my seat and gazed around at the people…city officials, county officials, young people, old people, men, women, blue collar, white collar.  According to the Times Enterprise over 600 people showed up.  That is a “Wow”.

Randy Young, a local teacher and Mark Lastinger, Times Enterprise Managing Editor organized this event.  They felt a need to gather the community citizens to talk about government concerns.  Randy Young, microphone in hand, mingled amongst the crowd wanting to know “What concerns them?” County/city spending and budgets, spiraling property taxes, recent tax assessments, local gas prices, consolidation of city/county services, concerns for those with fixed incomes, a lot of whys?

These people came together last night as a whole with one common goal…to talk about concerns with our government and the direction we are headed if we as average citizens continue to let the government and our elected officials run our country, state and counties with no input or interest from the people.

As the meeting was coming to a close, he encouraged the group to have a presence at next week’s budget meetings.

Another meeting is being planned for January and I hope more “voices” will attend.  I thank Randy and Mark for caring enough to organize this group.  It is crucial for each of us as American citizens, as Georgia citizens, and as Thomas County citizens and property owners to realize that we only have a “voice” in our government when we exercise that right.  It is time for each of us to participate and let our leaders know what we are thinking.  Unfortunately, many of us are not thinking anything…we have been content with “whatever”.  Our forefathers of this great nation would be very disappointed in the general apathy of “whatever” today but I am sure they would be proud of Randy, Mark and the people that attended last nights meeting.

It’s Okay to say “Hey” … and Remember to Smile!

7 November, 2008 (15:06) | Thomasville Georgia 31792 | By: admin

It’s OK to say “Hey”  and   Remember to Smile!!!

This morning while reading the Times Enterprise, I read Dr. Milton Gardner’s column on the importance of being friendly.  While he was giving a simple, no-nonsense message, it was a message that touched me and hopefully, other readers as well.

j0428103.jpg

Being a Thomasville native, graduating from CHS and being from an era of “everybody knowing everybody”, it was considered rude not to smile and be friendly.  My mom always said “Speak first, smile and mean it”….so we grew up never to meet a stranger.  Unfortunately in today’s time….we can not encourage our youngsters to be nice to strangers….it is not a safe and friendly world.

I encourage any of you reading this on this beautiful Friday to get a copy of the local paper, turn to 9-B and read the article.  It is a short column, with no big words….just a simple message that could make your day or someone else’s day.  I challenge you to go out and as Dr. Gardner said “Say Good Morning, offer a smile and a handshake.  It is not a Southern thing to do….it is a God thing”.

Dr. Gardner is a former pastor of First Baptist Church.  You can visit the church online at www.firstbaptistonline.com or for the real thing visit and worship with us on Sunday morning.  First Baptist Church is full of friendly and Godly people waiting to welcome you.
